Forget the Dorset Coast, this is known at Scotland's Jurassic Island. Skye is the best place in Scotland to find Jurassic fossils. Here you can find ammonites, belemnites, and reptile remains along some outstanding coastal areas.
(Getting there...
The easy bit first. Head for Glasgow and over the Erskine Bridge. From there, its up through some of the most amazing countyside the UK has to offer. Mountains, Lochs, the scenery changes mile upon mile. Set your sights on getting to Fort William, from there you will have 2 options.
1. Head to Mallaig on the A830 and cross on the ferry to Skye (personally at £50 for a return crossing in the car, its a bit steep, but its an option).
2. A82/A87 to Skye and over the Skye Bridge. (A much more scenic route imo).
Staying There.
Ok now you have a number of options available. Camping/Caravanning/B & B or Hotel. Considering we are concentratng our hunts on the east side of the island, Portree would be a good place to look at. Torvaig campsite is just out of Portree on the A855, £7 per night camping. If you wish to B & B/Hotel it, I would advise to book as early as possible, with it being high season).
