About “Psychedelic History of the Crystal Ballroom”-
Tim Hills is McMenamins’ longtime historian and wrote the history of the property entitled The Many Lives of the Crystal Ballroom (1997). Keith Cook worked at the Crystal in 1967-68 and is currently co-authoring a book on that time period in the Crystal’s history.

Cooper and The Jam

Cooper brings her rippin' soul act to the Crystal on the heels of her video debut of "Cut The Body Loose," the first single from her greatly anticipated EP release.

Fresh on the scene, Cooper brings a fiery spirit and a massive voice to the turn table. She performs with a power and tenacity that is difficult for most young women to muster. Backed by her extraordinary 11-piece soul band, this firecracker knows how to put on a show.

In March 2011, Cooper packed up her VW van in Portland, Oregon, and made the quest to Nashville, Tennessee. The flame haired songstress had paid dues playing in bands, acting in local productions, and bar-tending at a seedy rock’n’roll strip club. It was time to take a shot at her life time dream of recording her songs and forming a road band in music city. After months of knocking on doors, typical hard luck, and sleeping on an air mattress in an old ’60s hotel room, Cooper finally got someone to pay attention to her music and her talent. She began working with a producer and started writing the record she has always wanted to make, a soulful assortment of Motown style ballads and funky upbeat dance tunes sprinkled with rock-and-roll guitars and rich harmonies

She saved her pennies flipping cheeseburgers and popping beer caps at a popular honky tonk bar and formed two bands on each side of the country. The Jam, complete with horn sections, and back up singer/dancers is a collective of over 20 musicians that back her touring adventures. Her music is as big and bold as her ambition, and her performances rock the house.

Cooper played her first show in Nashville opening for the Queen of Rock and Roll herself, Wanda Jackson, at a birthday bash held for fashion icon Manuel. Her music caught the ear of music industry notables and she recorded her full length album, Motown Suite, at The Tracking Room (as seen on ABC's new hit drama Nashville), one of Nashville's top recording studios

On Record Store Day 2013, Cooper performed on both sides of the country in one day. She Pulled a cross-country stunt that included 21 musicians, 2 planes, 2 record stores, and a lot of balls. Most recently Cooper and The Jam opened for Legends Mavis Staples and Robert Plant at the Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland, Oregon.

Cooper's 7-inch single, “Cooper Live at the Historic Star Theater,” was selected as an official Record Store Day release, and the buzz has begun to spread as far as Japan, that this indie artist has something special. Cooper is a bright new talent that draws from the past and paints the future with a fresh and unique style.

Dirty Revival

Dirty Revival is becoming notorious for their unique ability to excite and entertain their audience with everything from catchy original tunes to danceable ‘90s hip-hop and R&B to unforgettable ‘60s and ‘70s funk and soul. Dirty Revival delivers this diverse mix of genres with their own distinct style that's dynamic, gritty and...well...dirty. The group performs with eight or more Portland musicians, complete with keys, horns and choreographed back-up singers. As the heart and soul of the group, Sarah Clarke, The Lady of DRC drives the dirty with arresting and passionate vocals that evoke the attitude and versatility of the timeless altos of yesterday's soul. The members of Dirty Revival fused in a flurry of shows and rehearsals, and they kept growing until the recipe was just right.

"Where the hell did all these people come from? In about fifteen minutes, the room went from nearly-empty to standing-room-only. Turns out, the funk/soul/groove band Dirty Revival...had taken over."
- Saidah Ali Wilson We Out Here Magazine

Dirty Revival has recently shared a stage with Nappy Roots, Masta Ace, and Chicharones and they performed at the 2013 NW Hip-Hop Festival and the Lardo East First Anniversary Party. In spring of 2014, they will launch their first EP, featuring four original songs, and announce a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to record a full album later in the year. Let's get dirty!

'80s Video Dance Attack - featuring VJ Kittyrox

Before it mutated into a weaponized haze of reality shows, MTV aired a novelty known as the music video. These bite-sized works of art, which married pop songs to striking imagery, revolutionized the entertainment industry and ushered in an era of music known as "new wave." For the task of curating and introducing these fresh sounds and flamboyant sights to audiences, MTV even created its own version of the disc jockey-the VJ.

Though MTV has sent its stable of video jockeys out to pasture, VJ Kittyrox carries the pastel, shoulder-padded torch of Adam Curry and Nina Blackwood as she masterminds the 80s Video Dance Attack. For the last eight years, this popular shindig has united generations of Portlandians with its five-hour feast of '80s-centric sensation.

Across 10-foot screens, VJ Kittyrox projects classic videos from artists such as Duran Duran and Michael Jackson as audiences of Breakfast Clubbers and Pretty in Pinkers perfect their cabbage patch, running man, and Pat Benatar shimmies. A bombastic, thumping sound system and a dazzling light show accentuate the time warp as audiences deck themselves in '80s garb and shake away memories of unsolved rubik's cubes.

Bloco Alegria

Bloco Alegria is Portland's newest Rio style samba band. Playing the heart-pumping rhythms of Rio's carnaval parades is what gives this band its unique sound and vibrancy. Composed of people who love samba, Bloco Alegria celebrates the music, dance, and culture of Brasil.

Samba is the most popular dance from Rio de Janeiro. It has deep African ancestral roots with respect to the drums used, the rhythms, and the structure of the music itself. Many of the members of Bloco Alegria have studied and played samba in the US or have gone to Brazil to learn more. Several speak Portuguese.

The word "Alegria" means "Happiness" in Portuguese. The word "Bloco" refers to a "City Block". Historically, people in different neighborhoods of Rio would get together and play samba in the streets, drawing their neighbors out to celebrate. Different neighborhood blocks would form different samba groups with creative and fun names. As time passed, these groups became more formalized and well-known throughout the city and the word "Bloco" took on the meaning of "group" or "band". Currently in Rio, samba groups that play in the streets include groups like "Bloco Suvaco do Cristo", "Bloco Simpatia e Quase Amor", and larger more internationally known groups like "Monobloco".
